Sādhana Pāda · Sutra 40
शौचात्स्वाङ्गजुगुप्सा परैरसंसर्गः
śaucātsvāṅgajugupsā parairasaṃsargaḥ
From purity arises disgust toward one’s own body and avoidance of contact with others.
This sutra describes an initial effect of śauca that may seem negative but is a necessary phase.
Svāṅga-jugupsā is a certain detachment from one’s own body, seeing its impure nature beyond appearances.
Paraiḥ asaṃsarga is the reduction of unnecessary contact with others, not from hatred but from disinterest in superficial interactions.
This phase of “disenchantment” purifies motivations. The yogi stops acting driven by physical attraction or need for social approval.
It’s not misanthropy or hatred of the body, but a recalibration: the body is an instrument, not identity; relationships are meaningful, not compulsive.
