Sādhana Pāda · Sutra 39

अपरिग्रहस्थैर्ये जन्मकथंतासंबोधः

aparigraha-sthairye janma-kathaṃtā-saṃbodhaḥ

When non-possessiveness is firm, knowledge of the how and why of birth arises.

Aparigraha established grants janma-kathaṃtā-saṃbodha: understanding of the how (kathaṃtā) of birth (janma).

When attachment to possessions ceases, the mind frees itself from the chains that bind it to material existence. In that clarity, understanding of the mechanisms of birth and death arises.

The yogi can perceive past lives, understand why they were born in particular circumstances, and see how karma weaves the fabric of existences.

This knowledge is not mere curiosity: understanding the causes of birth is the first step toward transcending the cycle.
