ब्रह्मचर्यप्रतिष्ठायां वीर्यलाभः

brahmacaryapratiṣṭhāyāṃ vīryalābhaḥ

When continence is firmly established, vigor is obtained.

Brahmacarya established results in vīrya, vital energy, potency.

Vīrya is not just physical strength, but the energy that drives all faculties: memory, intellect, will, endurance.

The yogic tradition considers that sexual energy, when not dissipated, transforms and ascends, nourishing higher capacities. This is the concept of ūrdhvaretas, the sublimation of energy.

It’s not necessarily about absolute celibacy, but about not wasting vital force on compulsive gratifications. Moderation conserves and transforms energy.

The yogi established in brahmacarya possesses a radiant vitality that comes from resources not squandered.
