When memory is purified, [the mind] seems empty of its own nature, shining only as the object. This is nirvitarka [absorption without discursive thought].

Nirvitarka samāpatti is a deeper level. Here memory (smṛti) is so purified that concepts, words, and associations no longer interfere.

Svarūpa-śūnya — the mind seems “empty of itself.” It does not disappear, but becomes so transparent that only the object shines (artha-mātra-nirbhāsā).

It is like water so clear it seems not to exist, revealing only the bottom. The knower has merged so completely with the known that the distinction practically disappears.
