Samādhi Pāda · Sutra 42

शब्दार्थज्ञानविकल्पैः सङ्कीर्णा सवितर्का समापत्तिः

śabda-artha-jñāna-vikalpaiḥ saṅkīrṇā savitarkā samāpattiḥ

Absorption with discursive thought (savitarka) is mixed with the alternation between word, meaning, and conceptual knowledge.

Savitarka samāpatti is the first stage of absorption on gross objects. At this level, three elements still alternate in consciousness:

  1. Śabda — The word, the name of the object
  2. Artha — The meaning, the object itself
  3. Jñāna — Conceptual knowledge about it

Although there is deep concentration, the mind still oscillates between these aspects. There is thought, though refined. It is samādhi with seed (sabīja) where mental content, though reduced, is still present.
