When fluctuations have weakened, the mind, like a pure crystal, takes on the form of that upon which it rests — whether the knower, the knowing, or the known. This is samāpatti.

Samāpatti (absorption) is illustrated with the crystal metaphor: when a pure crystal is placed next to a colored object, it appears to take on that color while remaining a crystal.

Similarly, the purified mind (kṣīṇa-vṛtti) can identify completely with:

• The knower (grahītṛ) — the subject
• The process of knowing (grahaṇa) — the instrument
• The known (grāhya) — the object

This fusion without losing essence is the beginning of samādhi.
