Samādhi Pāda · Sutra 40

परमाणुपरममहत्त्वान्तोऽस्य वशीकारः

paramāṇu-parama-mahattva-anto'sya vaśīkāraḥ

Its mastery extends from the smallest to the greatest.

Vaśīkāra means mastery, control. When the mind is trained through the described practices, it can concentrate on any object — from the tiniest atom (paramāṇu) to the infinitely vast (parama-mahattvam).

This sutra describes the range of the concentrated mind. There are no limits to what it can contemplate: the microscopic, the macroscopic, the subtle, the gross.

This capacity is both a description of the state of samādhi and a statement of the potential of the human mind when purified and focused. Consciousness can encompass any dimension of reality.
