Kaivalya Pāda · Sutra 15

वस्तुसाम्ये चित्तभेदात्तयोर्विभक्तः पन्थाः

vastu-sāmye citta-bhedāt tayoḥ vibhaktaḥ panthāḥ

The object being the same, the paths of mind and object are distinct due to the difference of minds.

The same object is perceived differently by different minds. This proves that object and perception follow separate paths (panthāḥ).

If object and mind were identical, all minds would perceive equally. But citta bheda, the difference between minds, produces varied experiences of the same object.

A flower may provoke joy in one who associates it with pleasant memories, sadness in one who connects it with loss, and indifference in one with no associations. The flower is the same; the minds, different.

This sutra establishes an important epistemological principle: reality is not completely determined by the object nor completely created by the mind. There is an interaction between both domains.

For the yogī, this reveals that purifying the mind transforms experience of the world, even though external objects remain the same. The work is internal.
