Kaivalya Pāda · Sutra 8
ततस्तद्विपाकानुगुणानामेवाभिव्यक्तिर्वासनानाम्
tataḥ tad-vipāka-anuguṇānām eva abhivyaktiḥ vāsanānām
From that arises the manifestation of only those vāsanās that correspond to the ripening of that karma.
This sutra explains the mechanism of manifestation of vāsanās, the latent impressions stored in the subconscious. Not all vāsanās are activated simultaneously.
Vipāka is the ripening or fruition of karma. Each life’s conditions, determined by mature karma, select which latent impressions will be activated.
It is like a garden with innumerable seeds: only those that find appropriate conditions of light, water, and temperature germinate. The rest remain dormant.
Each birth provides a specific field where certain vāsanās can express themselves. A human body allows different manifestations than an animal body; one historical era, different from another.
This teaching explains why certain patterns emerge in our lives while others remain latent. It also suggests that changing conditions can activate or deactivate different tendencies.
