Kaivalya Pāda · Sutra 4

निर्माणचित्तान्यस्मितामात्रात्

nirmāṇacittānyasmitāmātrāt

Created minds arise solely from the sense of individuality.

This sutra introduces a fascinating topic: the advanced yogī’s ability to project multiple minds or bodies. Nirmāṇa citta are emanated or constructed minds.

The source of this capacity is asmitā, the pure sense of “I am,” stripped of particular identifications. It is not the dense ego but individualized existence-consciousness in its most subtle form.

From this refined level of identity, the yogī can project manifestations that function with apparent autonomy. Texts describe yogīs appearing simultaneously in various places.

Beyond the phenomenal aspect, the sutra reveals something profound: all our mental experiences emerge from the basic sense of being an “I.” The multiplication of minds is simply an extension of this fundamental principle.

Understanding this helps recognize the constructed nature of our ordinary mind.
