Sādhana Pāda · Sutra 23
स्वस्वामिशक्त्योः स्वरूपोपलब्धिहेतुः संयोगः
sva-svāmi-śaktyoḥ svarūpa-upalabdhi-hetuḥ saṃyogaḥ
The union [of the seen with the seer] is the cause of recognizing the nature of both powers.
Saṃyoga (union) has a purpose: to allow both prakṛti and puruṣa to be recognized in their true nature.
Sva is the possessed (prakṛti); svāmī is the possessor (puruṣa). Their powers (śakti) are different but complementary.
Through worldly experience, consciousness gradually discerns: “this is not me, that is not me either.” Each erroneous identification, when recognized as such, brings one closer to the truth.
Svarūpopalabdhi is the recognition of one’s own nature. Paradoxically, confusion is necessary for clarity to arise.
Union is the means; discrimination is the end.
