Sādhana Pāda · Sutra 16
हेयं दुःखमनागतम्
heyaṃ duḥkhamanāgatam
The suffering that has not yet come can and should be avoided.
This sutra offers hope after the analysis of suffering. Past pain has already occurred; the present is being experienced; but the future is avoidable.
Heyam means “should be avoided” or “can be abandoned.” This is not fatalism: there is agency, there is the possibility of change.
Anāgatam is what has not yet arrived. Future karma, afflictions to come, can be prevented.
Yoga is essentially preventive. We cannot change the past, but we can stop creating the causes of future suffering.
This is one of the most hopeful sutras: liberation is possible, the cycle can be broken.
