Sādhana Pāda · Sutra 13
सति मूले तद्विपाको जात्यायुर्भोगाः
sati mūle tadvipāko jātyāyurbhogāḥ
While the root exists, its maturation determines birth, lifespan, and experiences.
Vipāka is the maturation or fruition of karma. As long as the kleśas remain as the root (mūla), karma will continue to produce fruits.
Three aspects of life are determined by matured karma:
Jāti: the species or type of birth, the circumstances into which one is born.
Āyus: the duration of life, the time allotted in each existence.
Bhoga: the experiences of pleasure and pain that are encountered.
This sutra explains why people are born into such different circumstances: each life is the expression of karma accumulated in previous existences.
