Ignorance is the field where the other afflictions grow, whether dormant, attenuated, interrupted, or active.

Avidyā is like fertile soil where the other four kleśas grow. As long as fundamental ignorance exists, the other afflictions can manifest.

Patañjali describes four states of the afflictions:

Prasupta (dormant): latent, not manifesting, like seeds waiting for favorable conditions.

Tanu (attenuated): weakened by practice, but not eliminated.

Vicchinna (interrupted): temporarily suppressed by another, stronger kleśa.

Udāra (active): fully operative, causing present suffering.

The practice of yoga works on all these levels, not just the obvious afflictions.
