Samādhi Pāda · Sutra 26

स पूर्वेषामपि गुरुः कालेनानवच्छेदात्

sa pūrveṣām api guruḥ kālena anavacchedāt

He is the teacher even of the ancients, not being limited by time.

Īśvara is the ādi-guru, the primordial teacher. All human teachers, however venerable, had teachers in turn. This chain of transmission (guru-paramparā) must have an origin, and that origin is Īśvara.

Kālena anavacchedāt means “not cut off by time.” Īśvara transcends temporality. It had no beginning and will have no end. Human teachers are born, teach, and die; Īśvara teaches eternally through intuition, scriptures, and inner guidance.

This sutra establishes the ultimate source of all authentic spiritual teaching.
