Samādhi Pāda · Sutra 15

दृष्टानुश्रविकविषयवितृष्णस्य वशीकारसंज्ञा वैराग्यम्

dṛṣṭānuśravika-viṣaya-vitṛṣṇasya vaśīkāra-saṃjñā vairāgyam

Detachment is the consciousness of mastery in one who is free from craving for objects seen or heard of.

Vairāgya has two dimensions:

  • Dṛṣṭa — Objects directly experienced (worldly pleasures)
  • Ānuśravika — Objects known through tradition (promises of paradise, future rewards)

Mature detachment is neither repression nor indifference. It is the natural freedom that arises when one understands the unsatisfactory nature of pursuing external objects for happiness.
