Bandha

“Lock” or “bond.” Specific muscular contractions that redirect pranic energy in the body.

The three main bandhas are:

  • Mula bandha — perineum contraction
  • Uddiyana bandha — abdominal contraction
  • Jalandhara bandha — throat lock

They are used during pranayama and asana to intensify and direct the flow of prana.
