ब्रह्मचर्य
Brahmacharya
yamasLiterally “walking toward Brahman.” Fourth yama of Ashtanga Yoga.
Traditionally translated as “celibacy” or “continence,” its meaning is broader: moderation in the use of vital energy, especially sexual energy.
In contemporary context it is interpreted as:
- Conscious use of energy
- Not dispersing oneself in superficial pleasures
- Directing vital force toward spiritual growth
The goal is not repression, but intelligent channeling.
