Then, having fulfilled their purpose, the sequence of transformations of the guṇas ends.

The three guṇas have fulfilled their function (kṛtārtha). During countless eons, their endless combinations and transformations served to provide experience for puruṣa. Now that purpose is complete.

Pariṇāma krama samāpti is the termination of the sequence of changes. The guṇas don’t cease to exist, but their dance no longer involves this particular puruṣa. They have completed their work and withdraw.

It is like actors who, the play finished, retire from the stage. The drama of experience has concluded for this spectator. The actors may continue in other performances, for other spectators, but this show has ended.

Prakṛti exists for puruṣa. When puruṣa recognizes its own nature, prakṛti no longer has reason to manifest before it. The relationship dissolves naturally, without violence or rejection.

This is the mystery of liberation: it is not escape from prakṛti but fulfillment of its purpose.
