Kaivalya Pāda · Sutra 25
विशेषदर्शिन आत्मभावभावनाविनिवृत्तिः
viśeṣadarśina ātmabhāvabhāvanāvinivṛttiḥ
For one who sees the distinction, the projection of the mind as the self ceases.
This sutra marks a crucial turning point. Viśeṣadarśin is one who sees the difference, who has attained discernment between puruṣa and prakṛti.
For this person, ātmabhāva bhāvanā ceases (vinivṛtti): the tendency to project or imagine that the mind is the self. They no longer confuse instrument with user, reflection with source.
This confusion is the fundamental error perpetuating suffering. We believe we are our thoughts, emotions, memories. We identify with the changing contents of the mind.
Discernment reveals the mind is object, not subject. It is something we have, not something we are. This understanding is not merely intellectual but experiential, result of sustained practice.
When mistaken identification ceases, the question “who am I?” referred to the mind ceases. The answer becomes evident: I am the consciousness observing all this.
