The seer is pure seeing alone; though pure, it observes through the colorations of the mind.

Draṣṭā (the seer, puruṣa) is dṛśi-mātra, pure capacity to see, consciousness without content of its own.

Śuddha means pure, unmixed. Puruṣa is never really contaminated; its purity is immutable.

Pratyaya-anupaśya means “observing through cognitions.” Although puruṣa is pure, it appears to see through the filter of the mind (buddhi), like light passing through colored glass.

This apparent coloration is the cause of confusion. Puruṣa seems to take on the qualities of the mind, although in reality it always remains immaculate.

Recognizing this distinction is the heart of discernment (viveka).
