Sādhana Pāda · Sutra 7
सुखानुशयी रागः
sukhānuśayī rāgaḥ
Attachment is that which accompanies pleasure.
Rāga is the compulsive attraction that arises after experiencing pleasure. It is not the pleasure itself, but the trace it leaves, the longing to repeat it.
Anuśayī means “that which follows,” “that which remains dormant.” After each pleasurable experience, a residue remains, a seed of desire that seeks to recreate that experience.
This kleśa generates an endless cycle: we seek pleasure, obtain it briefly, and the trace it leaves pushes us to seek it again.
The problem is not in enjoying what is pleasant, but in the compulsion, in the loss of freedom that comes from being bound to the desire for repetition.
