Samādhi Pāda · Sutra 38
स्वप्ननिद्राज्ञानालम्बनं वा
svapna-nidrā-jñāna-ālambanaṃ vā
Or by supporting [the mind] on knowledge of dream and deep sleep.
This sutra proposes reflecting on the states of dreaming (svapna) and deep sleep (nidrā) as objects of contemplation.
In dream sleep, the mind creates entire worlds without external objects — revealing its creative power. In deep sleep, all modifications temporarily cease but the witness remains — evidenced by the fact that upon waking we know that we slept.
Contemplating these states reveals the nature of consciousness: that it persists through all states, that it is independent of objects, and that its essence is peace. Yoga is like waking from a deeper dream.
