Samādhi Pāda · Sutra 36

विशोका वा ज्योतिष्मती

viśokā vā jyotiṣmatī

Or [meditating on] that which is free from sorrow and luminous.

Viśokā means “without pain, without sorrow.” Jyotiṣmatī means “full of light, luminous.” This sutra offers meditation on inner light as an object of concentration.

It typically refers to the light of the spiritual heart (hṛdaya) or the luminous space between the eyebrows (ājñā). This inner light is always present but normally veiled by mental agitation.

Contemplating this light that is beyond suffering reminds the meditator of their true nature: pure consciousness, self-luminous, never truly touched by the pain of conditioned existence.
