The other [samādhi] is preceded by the practice of cessation, and only latent impressions remain.

Asamprajñāta samādhi is the state where all conscious mental activity has ceased. There is no object of meditation, no thought, no awareness of separation.

Virāma-pratyaya means “content of cessation” — the mind stabilizes in the space between thoughts until that space expands and becomes the permanent state.

However, saṃskāras (latent impressions) still remain. Although the surface of the lake is perfectly still, the seeds of future vṛttis lie at the bottom. This samādhi is “with seed” (sabīja), preparing the ground for the seedless samādhi of the final sutra.
