Samādhi Pāda · Sutra 1

अथ योगानुशासनम्

atha yogānuśāsanam

Now, the teaching of yoga.

Atha marks an auspicious beginning. It is not simply “now” in a temporal sense, but the moment when the student is ready. It implies there has been prior preparation and a disposition to receive the teaching.

Anuśāsanam means instruction or discipline transmitted within a tradition. Patañjali does not invent yoga; he systematizes and transmits what he has received.

This sutra sets the tone: yoga is a practical discipline that requires preparation, readiness, and guidance.
