“Eight limbs.” The system of yoga codified by Patañjali in the Yoga Sutras.

The eight limbs are:

  1. Yama — Ethical restraints (ahimsa, satya, asteya, brahmacharya, aparigraha)
  2. Niyama — Observances (saucha, santosha, tapas, svadhyaya, ishvara pranidhana)
  3. Asana — Stable posture
  4. Pranayama — Regulation of prana
  5. Pratyahara — Withdrawal of senses
  6. Dharana — Concentration
  7. Dhyana — Meditation
  8. Samadhi — Absorption

Hatha Yoga specifically prepares the third and fourth limbs, creating the physical and energetic conditions for higher states.
