Dharana
practiceConcentration. Sixth limb of Ashtanga Yoga.
Fixing the mind on a single point: the breath, a mantra, an image, a bodily sensation, or any chosen object. When attention wanders, it is brought back without judgment.
Dharana requires effort. The mind is not accustomed to remaining focused; its natural tendency is to jump between thoughts. Systematic practice strengthens the ability to sustain attention.
When dharana stabilizes and effort diminishes, it naturally evolves into dhyana.
